“Popoli in Arte” was born officially on the 22th of April 2007 by a small team of volunteers who had made experiences of international cooperation and who aimed to renew the terms of the traditional international cooperation. Namely, as stated in its 2019 statute (following the law 11//2017), the association:
- “Promotes and engages in an international cooperation approach based on mutual exchanges”
- “Promotes and disseminates the theories and practices of the popular education in Italy and in the world”
- “Promotes and disseminates the art-education in Italy and in the world”
- “Promotes practices of mutual aid and income support where it operates”
- “Promotes the defence of human, social, and political rights of resident and transit migrants wherever it operates”.
Now the Association has 24 members whose main core acts in the province of Imperia, but it has members in the Low Piemonte, in Chiavari and Trento in Italy; in Berlino, San Sebastian and Bruxelles in Europe; in Recife in Brasil and in Bogotà outside Europe.

All the member of the Directive Board of the Association have theorical knolegde and practical experiences of the principles and of the praxis of the community education according to the Brazilian pedagogist Paulo Freire.
In the methodology the Association prefers to replace the word “project” with the word “process” and it means as process all the relationship/s with the partners or individuals with whome, from time to time, the Association approaches. Therefore, at the end of an activity, the evaluation is based on the question: “Which and how many contacts have been activated? What is it moving?” and not only “Have we targeted our goal?” in a lecture of the everlasting flux of the history
Community education, born in Latin America, is the thread wich has tied the activities which were and are carried out by the Association, in the awareness that today community education itself – efficace former mean of resistence against the military dictatorship of the past – has still its contribution to give to the formal education in America and is a possible answer to the educational challanges everywhere, either in formal and informal contexts.
“Popoli in Arte” is a small association and, mainly, it collects funds from offerings of privates or Associations; other kind of fund raising of the Association is the progressive and specific initiatives of fund raising (charity raffle, participation to antique and collectionism markets and to artcraft markets). Since september 2013, we rent a space in Sanremo, the Association rented a store in Sanremo, 613 Galilei str. for storing materials which are donated to the Association. For some years “Popoli in Arte” has collaborated with some local” Solidarity Purchase Groups” by making homemade soaps and other products for hygiene and beauty.
It is member of the “Service Center for volunteering of the province of Imperia”/ “Centro Servizi per il volontariato della provincia di Imperia” (CE.S.P.IM) from which it has received several economical supports for its educational activities along the years; it has received small amount of money from Public Institutions in 2007 and 2008; the Town Hall of Sanremo supported “Popoli in Arte” for the “Woods’ Festival” in 2015 and the Town Hall of Sanremo together with the Casinò of Sanremo supported the “Woods’ Festival” in 2016 and in 2017; in 2015 it received a specific fund from “Otto per Mille Valdese” (Valdese Church) for durable goods in the store of the Association (window-door to better outer closing of the local).
The association is part of the CVSPolis, the provincial office for charity organisations, from which it received several funds for educational activities throughout the years. We were publicly funded in 2007 and 2008. Sanremo’s Local Council supported the “Festival dei Boschi” in 2015, joined by the Casino di Sanremo in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. In 2015 and 2018 we were financed by the otto per mille of the Valdese church in order to improve, at first, the conditions of the space (in particular the front door), secondly, to equip it with toilets. For the development of art-education activities in Ventimiglia and Vallecrosia, the association was funded respectively by “Autostrade per l’Italia spa” and the Council of Vallecrosia.
