“Popoli in Arte” fostered the birth of an Italian network of popular education with great dedication, looking for contacts among scholars as well as among the grassroots of the movements. The cooperative Giolli from Montechiarugolo (Parma) showed its interest in the project. This cooperative has long been working, both on a theoretical and practical level, on the dissemination of the Theatre of the Oppressed and the thought of Augusto Boal in Italy. Starting from this first union, other formal and informal groups, as well as individuals, joined the movement willing to share the theories and practices of the two Brazilian intellectuals Freire and Boal. We shared the belief in the transformative value of the word and the theatrical action according to Freire and Boal in the Italian socio-political context. Year after year, summer seminars took place (Ceriana IM, 2010; Casaltone PR, 2011; Veano PC, 2012; Monterano VT, 2013; Veano PC, 2014; Cataeggio VA, 2015; Modica RG, 2016; Padova, 2017; Vallecrosia IM, 2018; Fiavé TN 2019). The aim of these meetings is to compare practices, methodologies and topics of particular common interest such as “the crisis”. Progressively, we started realizing that we wanted to form a common subject. This conceptual and organisational passage took place during the seminar in Modica (Sicily) in 2016.
Since 2017 we started a political reflection about the grass-roots politics. The first seminar on the topic took place in January 2017 in Casaltone PR. The second one took place in December 2018 and was followed by a third in May 2019.
